Balloon Sinuplasty
Pressure, congestion, headaches — for people dealing with chronic sinus problems, these symptoms are all too familiar. Luckily, a new minimally-invasive procedure being offered at Good Samaritan Hospital’s Same Day Surgery Center can alleviate these symptoms for many, dramatically improving their quality of life.
Relief is available, thanks to new technology that can clear sinus cavities and have patients back to their normal lives the very next day. Nasal Endoscopy Balloon Sinuplasty can be likened to heart angioplasty. In Balloon Sinuplasty, a small, flexible balloon catheter and guide wire are inserted through the nostril to access the blocked sinus. Once the catheter and guide wire are in the blocked sinus passageway, the balloon is gently inflated to open the blocked sinus. The balloon is deflated and removed and normal sinus drainage and function are restored.
In fact, the benefits that come from undergoing this Balloon Sinuplasty, the newest treatment method available, are very significant, especially when compared to traditional treatment methods. Before Balloon Sinuplasty was introduced, there were only two options for dealing with chronically congested sinuses: medical therapies, such as antibiotics or topical steroids and conventional sinus surgeries that involve removing bone and tissue to clear sinus cavities.
However, Balloon Sinuplasty is different. It is a minimally-invasive procedure and since it does not involved removing any bone or tissue, patients can generally expect to resume their normal lives in days instead of weeks. There is little to no need for sinus packing and potential scarring and bleeding are held to a minimum. Plus, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis.
