Breast Specific Gamma Imaging

Good Samaritan Hospital is one of the first in Indiana to offer the latest, innovative technology for the diagnosis of breast cancer in the world. When mammography and ultrasound results are inconclusive, the new Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) will aid in the diagnosis of breast cancer. As a follow-up to your annual mammogram or an ultrasound, your physician may order a BSGI to detect early stages of cancer as small as a grain of sand. BSGI is a molecular breast imaging technique. A small amount of tracing agent is delivered to the patient and is immediately dispersed to all cells in the body. Images of the breast are then taken with the BSGI camera. Because cancerous cells are growing and are more active than in healthy breasts, this activity shows up as a “hot spot” on the images of the breast, warning of cancer. The images allow radiologist and breast surgeons to detect early stage cancers as small as one millimeter, as well as, distinguish between benign and malignant tumors.
