After a heart attack or other cardiac disorder, patients need to learn how to maintain optimal heart health. Cardiac rehabilitation is critical to the recovery process and often begins at the inpatient level following surgical procedures. Specially trained nurses administer the program, which emphasizes disease management, nutritional and lifestyle counseling, and exercise. Cardiac rehabilitation is conveniently located within the Dayson Heart Center.
Because the heart is a muscle, exercise is critical to recovery. We offer a four-phase program that helps cardiac patients develop heart-healthy routines at every stage of recovery. The program, called Active Hearts, begins with inpatient education and exercise for patients who are recovering from heart attacks or suffering from heart disease. Phase two is delivered on an outpatient basis at Dayson Heart Center and builds upon the exercise and education routines begun during phase one.
Phase three is risk reduction and it lasts from four to six months. This regiment is hosted at the Vincennes YMCA and overseen by a Good Samaritan Hospital registered nurse and exercise physiologist.
The fourth and final phase is health maintenance. Just as the name implies, it focuses on helping individuals transition to a new, healthier lifestyle. This phase of ongoing education and encouragement continues indefinitely.
