Intravenous Pyelogram

Good Samaritan Hospital knows time is of the essence when you're not feeling well. That's why we're committed to performing cutting-edge procedures that give physicians the best possible chance to find problems in their earliest stages — helping you to quickly head down the road to recovery. One example of how we demonstrate our commitment is by offering Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) to our patients who suffer from urinary tract discomfort.

The Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP), a non-invasive X-ray examination that is quick and painless for patients, provides detailed information to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary tract conditions. Often the information an IVP provides is enough to allow physicians to treat conditions with medication and avoid more invasive surgical procedures.

During the IVP, an iodine-based contrast dye is injected into a vein and a series of X-ray images are taken at timed intervals. The procedure helps evaluate infections in the bladder and the kidneys, blood in the urine, flank pain (which may be from kidney stones), tumors, and evaluates the urinary tract for damage after an abdominal injury.
