Myelogram

(mahy-uh-luh-gram)

Myelography is an imaging examination that shows the passage of dye in the space around the spinal cord using a real-time form of x-ray called fluoroscopy. Unlike normal, static x-ray images, fluoroscopy makes it possible to see internal organs in motion, and can provide a highly detailed picture of the spinal cord and column.

Myelography is most commonly used to detect abnormalities of the spinal cord, spinal canal, and spinal nerve roots including tumors, inflammations, herniated or ruptured discs, or arthritis. Myelograms are usually performed on an outpatient basis.
