Peripheral Arteriography

An arteriogram, also known as an angiogram, is an x-ray examination of the arteries. A peripheral arteriogram refers to the arteries found in your arms and legs. Because arteries are not normally seen on x-rays, a contrast material, or dye, is used to make them visible, allowing physicians to view and assess any problems.
Angiograms are used to:

  • Rule out pulmonary embolisms

  • Detect atherosclerosis in the carotid artery of the neck, which can cause a stroke

  • Identify aneurysms in the aorta and other major vessels, as well as in the brain

  • Detect thrombosis (clots) in veins
