Planned giving enables donors to take advantage of tax provisions while giving larger amounts than otherwise might be possible. Through planned giving, donors can perpetuate their interest and support of Good Samaritan Hospital beyond their lifetime.
A planned gift is any gift, given for any amount and for any purpose, which is made through estate or financial planning. Making appropriate, significant, charitable contributions generally requires the assistance of a professional legal or financial planner.
Planned giving allows donors to arrange charitable contributions in a manner that maximizes their personal benefits while minimizing their after-tax costs. Depending upon their choice of gift asset and arrangement, a donor can generally expect to obtain some or all of the following benefits:
-
Tax savings through the charitable deduction for the value of the gift
-
Avoidance of the capital gains tax on contributions of appreciated property for certain gifts
-
Retained income rights for the life of the donor and/or other beneficiaries
-
Elimination of federal estate tax on the value of the interest in the property, passing to charity upon the donor's death
