Virtual Colonoscopy

Colorectal cancer (cancer that begins in either the colon or rectum) is the third most common kind of cancer diagnosed in the United States. Fortunately, its also among the easiest to detect and treat — when its in the early stages. During a colonoscopy, physicians examine the inside of the colon, looking for tumors or growths called polyps, that can develop into tumors. The polyps are removed before they become cancerous.

Advancements in technology allows physicians today to "see" the inside of the colon with a non-invasive procedure. Commonly known as a "virtual colonoscopy," patients undergo a CT scan which generates a crisp, accurate three-dimensional image of the colon in real time. Physicians then scrutinize the image, looking for polyps or other abnormalities, as if they are traveling through the colon.

A virtual colonoscopy is far less invasive than the traditional method. During a virtual colonoscopy, the patient's colon is dilated with air. Two images are created — one with the patient laying on his or her back and one with the patient laying on his or her stomach.
