Diabetes: The Basics

Diabetes is a chronic disease that should be managed to help prevent acute and chronic complications.

In Type 1 diabetes the pancreas makes little or no insulin. Insulin injections are a necessity for Type 1 diabetes along with a meal plan and exercise.

In Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas makes insulin but either doesn't make enough or the body cells are resistant to the insulin. Treatment for Type 2 includes diet, exercise, oral medication and /or insulin.

In Gestational diabetes, which occurs during pregnancy, women are unable to produce the extra insulin required during pregnancy. Typically the Gestational diabetes goes away after delivery, but the women are at a higher risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life.
