Good Samaritan To Host 13th Annual Men’s Health Tune-Up

Good Samaritan’s annual Men’s Health Tune-Up is right around the corner. The event will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Highland Woods Community Center on Hart Street. The tune-up will offer a wide array of vital health screenings specifically aimed toward men. Some of the free screenings that will be offered include: Lipid Profile (Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglycerides), Blood Sugar, Creatinine/Glomerular Filtration Rate (Kidney Function), PSA (Prostate Cancer Screening), Respiratory Function, Colorectal Take-Home Kits, Blood Pressure and more. 12-hour fasting is recommended for these screenings, but is not required.

“We usually expect around 500-600 men each year,” said Rob McLin, President and CEO at Good Samaritan. “That is a very large number of people in our community who we are able to help and provide free preventative services to. We want to get them on the right track toward being happy and healthy.”

The Men’s Health Tune-Up began 12 years ago after it was demonstrated that there was a critical need to bring education and health screenings to the public. In 2016, 575 men from Knox and the surrounding communities took advantage of the free blood screenings. Of those men an astounding 48% had abnormal triglyceride screenings, 73% had abnormal LDL and 7% had abnormal PSA numbers.

“The Dayson Heart Center has been present at every Good Samaritan Men’s Health Tune-Up through the years, focusing on ways to control cardiac risk factors. We will be screening for high blood pressure this year,” said Julie Thomas, Director of the Dayson Heart Center. “High blood pressure is not only known as the ‘silent killer,’ but is a risk factor to heart attack and stroke. The best way to know if you have high blood pressure is to keep track of it. High blood pressure can be managed, once diagnosed. Please visit our booth at the Men’s Tune Up for your blood pressure screen and information on managing hypertension.”

Some of the other departments on hand will include Endoscopy, Pharmacy, Oncology, Trauma, Samaritan Center, Joint Replacement Center, Physician Services and more.

A new feature of the tune-up this year is that each attendee will have the opportunity to win door prizes, including a grill and leaf blower donated by Good Samaritan’s Foundation. Other prize baskets will also be available to win throughout the night.

Reservations are not required for this event. The Men’s Health Tune-Up will be held Tuesday, October 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Highland Woods Community Center, 1377 S. Hart Street. For more information, call the Good Samaritan Marketing Department at 812-885-3336.
