Richmond, Virginia is Shawn’s home, where he attended Virginia Commonwealth University and earned two BS degrees, one in Biology- minor Chemistry and one in Psychology. Shawn has enjoyed being a player, coach, referee, and fan of basketball and soccer, and has worked with youth in Australia and in the US. He coached basketball and refereed youth soccer for 5 years, which taught him to communicate with parents, players, and coaches while maintaining enthusiasm for the sports. He was a mentor for African American 5th-grade boys interested in science, high schoolers applying to college via the STAR Mentorship Program, undergraduates interested in Immunology and Genetics, and recently was one of the first to join the mentorship collective Prescribe It Forward, committed to helping underrepresented students interested in medicine. He embraces his culture by practicing bhangra dance and cooking traditional food at home. Shawn is a geography, history, and current events buff. He enjoys Jeopardy with his family and spent time kayaking through the canals and bayous around New Orleans.
