Roy Evans, a 65-year-old from Lawrenceville, Illinois, spent years living with the exhausting effects of sleep apnea. Diagnosed in 1995, he spent more than a decade trying to make CPAP therapy work—but it never fit his lifestyle.
“I move around so much,” Roy said. “The mask was always waking me up. It would leak, shift, or I’d just take it off and throw it on the nightstand and say, ‘That’s enough.’ I wasn’t getting any sleep. For the last 10 years, I hadn’t used it at all.” Without treatment, Roy’s nights were restless and his days were drained of energy. “I’d wake up two or three times a night… I was real tired during the day,” he says. “It was a real toll on me.”
Everything changed when Roy learned about Inspire therapy and turned to the Good Samaritan Sleep Medicine Clinic for care. After an evaluation by Siddharth Jani, MD, Roy was determined to be a candidate for the Inspire device. He then underwent a minimally invasive outpatient procedure to receive the Inspire implant, a treatment designed to help manage obstructive sleep apnea without the need for a mask.
The results were immediate and dramatic. “I went from having like 18 events in one hour to zero,” Roy says. Within the first week, he began to notice the difference. “I don’t wake up as much… I wake up more refreshed. I feel like I have more energy.”
For Roy, one of the biggest changes has been the simplicity of the device. Instead of managing bulky equipment and nightly frustrations, he now uses a small handheld remote. “I just click it on when I go to bed… and turn it off in the morning.” The convenience has made a meaningful impact on his daily life, allowing him to travel easily and sleep comfortably without interruption.
Just as important as the device itself was the care he received along the way. “I’ve been treated with such care at Good Samaritan,” Roy says. “Everyone has been very attentive to my needs.” From sleep studies to follow-up visits with Dr. Jani, his experience reinforced his confidence in both the device and the team supporting him.
Today, Roy is no longer defined by exhaustion. He sleeps through the night, wakes up with energy, and no longer depends on daytime naps. “I’m not tired all the time like I used to be,” he says.
Grateful for the transformation, Roy now shares his story with others who may be struggling. “I would recommend this to anybody who is eligible,” he says. “It has changed my life… I am so thankful.”
For patients who haven’t found success with CPAP therapy, Roy’s journey is a reminder that better sleep—and a better quality of life—may be closer than they think. If his story sounds familiar, schedule a consultation with Dr. Jani or Audra McQuade, AGACNP by calling 812-885-6860.
