Good Samaritan’s annual Men’s Health Tune-Up is right around
the corner. The event will be held Tuesday, October 4 from 4 to 7 p.m.
at the Highland Woods Community Center on Hart Street. The tune-up will
offer a wide array of vital health screenings specifically aimed toward
men. Some of the free screenings that will be offered include; Lipid Profile
(Total Cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglycerides), Blood Sugar, Creatinine/Glomerular
Filtration Rate (Kidney Function), PSA (Prostate Cancer Screening), Respiratory
Function, Colorectal Take-Home Kits, Blood Pressure and more. 12-hour
fasting is recommended for these screenings, but is not required.
“Every year we are amazed by how many men attend this free event
and how appreciative they are,” said Rob McLin, President and CEO.
“We continue this event year after year because we know the impact
it is making on these men’s lives.” There will be plenty of
other activities in addition to the screenings, including exhibits and
demonstrations, as well as hot dogs and beverages that will be served.
The Men’s Health Tune-Up began 12 years ago after it was demonstrated
that there was a critical need to bring education and health screenings
to the public. In 2015, 600 men from Knox and the surrounding communities
took advantage of the free blood screenings. Of those men an astounding
68% had abnormal blood pressure, 45% had abnormal triglyceride screenings,
71% had abnormal LDL and 7% had abnormal PSA numbers.
“The Men's Health Tune-Up is a very important community event.
It provides, in this instance, the male members of our community the opportunity
to focus on their health and well being,” said Dodie Halter, Director
of Endoscopy. “Many times men are reluctant to admit they have a
health concern or question. This event gives men a chance to gain information
from the many different departments located at Good Samaritan. It also
gives the specific departments a chance to interact with individuals sharing
their knowledge and expertise.”
The Endoscopy Department will once again be showcasing a walk-through colon
model. Endoscopy staff will show the normal and abnormal findings that
are demonstrated on the model. Some of the other departments on hand will
include Cardiology, Pharmacy, Oncology, Trauma, Samaritan Center, Joint
Replacement Center, Physician Services and more.
Reservations are not required for this event. Everyone who attends will
also be able to register for door prizes that will be awarded throughout
the night. The Men’s Health Tune-Up will be held Tuesday, October
4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Highland Woods Community Center, 1377 S. Hart Street.
